The July 17 edition of Gerry Dawes &Friends featured a theme near and dear to my heart, real, authentic pit barbecue, the kind I grew up with in Southern Illinois.  As a matter of fact, one of the great legends of American Barbecue—and we are not talking about grilling out back on the barbie here—is man named Mike “The Legend” Mills, whose flagship barbecue restaurant, 17th Street Bar & Grill, is in Murphysboro, Illinois, which is some 350 miles southwest of Chicago, below the Mason-Dixon line and the town where I happened to have been born, back in the pre-history.

This program features exclusive interviews with Mike Mills and with the incredible Gary Roark of Ubon’s Barbecue, Ubon’s Sauce and Ubon’s Bloody Mary Mix in Yazoo, Mississippi, who is one of the funniest guys I have ever met and a star on the national BBQ circuit.  Listening to Gary Roark telling, with a straight face (he would be crushed if you doubted him) about a guy picking up a dime off the street with a fork lift, doing his Little Mike, Michael Jackson backward Moonwalk and breaking his wrist in Chicago (“cause I got the Boogie in me!” and “when I hear music, it has to come out.” 

Also featured are celebrity photographer Ken Goodman talking about Mike Mills and his daughter Amy and the great David Knight, producer of the Ole Hickory Pit Barbecue Pits, which are used by most of the great barbecue pitmasters and are now even sold abroad.  Dave Knight is from Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Gerry’s Dishes World’s Greatest Margarita from the book Peace, Love &  Barbecue, which Mike Mills did with his daughter, Amy Mills, in which this Margartia recipe and stories about me are featured.
